This series of self-portraits, which started in 2012, is about Gilles de la Tourette’s syndrome (which is a neuro-psychiatric illness and an important characteristic of Tourette is having tics.) where Anniek documented her tics with simple cameras to catch the movement and her feelings.
After a decade she will continue documenting this personal project and express herself through these self-portraits where she will show you her tics, personal feelings, anxiety and pain.
“I suffer from tics. A tic is an involuntary, rapid, uncontrolled and stereotypical movement or vocal expression. For me, that means at this point that I have a number of different types of tics. Additional symptoms of Tourette syndrome can be obsessions and compulsive (ritual) actions, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior.
These visuals are not typically beautiful images, but they do give a raw image of what I experience.”
“a tic
keeps repeating itself
and again
and again
and again”
“muscle strain
neck is stuck
spastic movement
full with tension
a broken bod”
“when a tic
takes over
the control
of your body
you fight
the movement
or you
let it happen”
